Father of 500 children alone, mother of one told to stop

Only 41 years old. At this age, a man in the Netherlands has fathered more than 500 children, an organization called the Donorkind Foundation of the country claims. The organization primarily helps find the source of children born through sperm donation.

He was a 'regular donor' donating sperm at home and abroad, the Netherlands' Den Haag-based organization DonnerKind said in a statement. Recently, the mother of one of the man's children has taken the initiative to stop his sperm donation. The woman has appealed to a court in the country requesting that the man not be allowed to donate sperm.

According to the health guidelines of the Netherlands, a sperm donor can father a maximum of 25 children. This number is determined to avoid possible abuse and psychological problems of the child. However, if more children are born through sperm donation, a criminal case cannot be filed against that person.

Authorities say the sperm donor, named Jonathan M, was warned by the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (NVOG) in 2017 not to donate any more sperm. Till that time he fathered a total of 102 children in 11 hospitals. And despite receiving warnings, he refused to donate sperm regularly.

Jonathan claims that as a musician, he donates sperm at home and abroad to keep his genetic contribution alive.

Tice van der Meer, chairman of the DonorKind Foundation, said his organization had received multiple phone calls from more than 30 mothers this week. He said, 'All those mothers called from different parts of the world. They are all worried about whether their child is from the same donor's sperm.

Tice van der Meer said Jonathan did not mention the true number of children he had. He himself is in regular contact with some of the mothers of Jonathan's 500 children.

Two years ago, a 38-year-old woman named Ines M from the Netherlands became the mother of a daughter with sperm from an unknown donor. We need to fight about this, he remarked. I can imagine how difficult this matter is.' He said that his daughter will have the opportunity to meet the sperm donor when she turns 16.

The DonorKind Foundation says there is currently a backlash against donor anonymity. Because it becomes very complicated for each of them to control the number of children. "Anonymity" goes against children's rights, says Tice van der Meer.

The DonnerKind Foundation has called on the Netherlands authorities to destroy Jonathan's already preserved samples. However, women who have had children with Jonathan's sperm and wish to give their child another sibling can only be given one from that preserved sample.

In the Netherlands, public or private hospitals pay the donor between 10 and 20 dollars for each sperm donation.
